A language spoken in Zambia and Zimbabwe
Welcome to your Chitonga language learning journey!
Chitonga (also called Tonga) is a Bantu language spoken mainly in Southern Zambia and parts of Northern Zimbabwe. It remains central to everyday life, identity, and cultural tradition among the Tonga people.
This platform is dedicated to teaching the Tonga language and supporting its preservation for current and future generations. Whether you are a beginner, reconnecting with your roots, or simply curious, you are welcome to learn and explore Chitonga here.
The Learn Tonga website was created by me, Mayaba, a Zambian Tonga who moved to the UK as a child and is passionate about preserving and sharing my language. There arenโt many Tonga speakers in the UK Zambian diaspora community, and I noticed I was starting to forget key phrases, so this began as a personal project to stay connected to my language and roots.
Others are welcome to contribute missing words, record audio clips that have not been added yet, and offer corrections through the Contribute and Contact forms above. Community input helps keep Learn Tonga accurate, useful, and growing for everyone.
